I'm still feeling good after the LONG
day yesterday. My husband and myself spend the entire day at the
hospital meeting the doctor who will do the surgery, several
other doctors, nurses and see the wing of the hospital I'll be in.
I also had to have another CAT scan, which I really hate. After
seeing the dietitian associated with the cancer center, not the
hospital, I'm to basically "pig out" on protein a week before the
surgery and 2 weeks after it, to help me heal.
I have a
very rare type of cancer called
psuedomyxoma peritonel.
As a matter of fact, there were only 1300 cases of it in the US
last year. I told the surgeon that my daughter is calling my cancer "snotty
appendix", and he really liked that nick name.
This surgery can take anywhere from to 6-20 hours, it all depends upon how much belly slime or mucus is inside my belly and how many organs are covered with it.
Apparently with this rare cancer, once it's discovered and taken care of you are okay. Generally you don't have to worry about it happening again because they have removed the culprit IE the appendix.
The surgery had been tentatively scheduled, I had to see my primary care doctor for okay on the surgery, and then meet the surgeon. He then agreed that I was okay for the surgery. At least this hospital in is better than the funny farm (IE the U of MI at Ann Arbor) because I have to be there a day before the surgery. Being a juvenile onset diabetic that makes me feel REAL good about things.
I'll have to be in the hospital 8-10 day. I'm hoping for 6, the doctor said that's being overly optimistic, but it's good I have a goal to shoot for.
I have to bring my list of food sensitivities with and hope the hospital can feed me. Otherwise we'll have to do what we did at the funny farm and bring them in ourself. That is a royal pain, but I'm not going to have my abdomen swell after having this surgery.
