I don't really care for how the diabetic community had changed how we determine how much insulin to take. Now, they do it by the number of carbohydrates a food has. This is probably the dumbest thing they've done. Why? Because it's pretty much a guessing game, even my wonderful endocrinologist agrees with me on this point. How I used to do it was by the number of calories I was eating or the size/amount of each food group IE fruit, starch, dairy, fat, vegetable, protein. There was also the free group, which were items that you could have as much as you wanted without worry.
There's a book that a lot of diabetics thinks just wonderful for carbohydrate counting. First I downloaded the 2015 version for my tablet, and I put the 2016 paper back copy on my wish list. I'm not thrilled with The Calorie King Calorie Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. Why? Because of the stupid way it's laid out. I doesn't have the foods where I think they belong. This books is pretty much used for when you dine out. And it doesn't always agree with the restaurant or fast food's nutritional value page.
Before I got this book, I started keeping track of all the foods I was eating because I was thinking about getting a pump and I knew counting carbohydrates was the way the endo liked to do things. After a while, I decided I wanted to have the book in print, along with 4 different insulin to carbohydrate guides for the foods in print to keep where I have my log book. I then decided to put the book up for sale. Here's the link:

There is also an interesting page that allows you to input all the ingredients of a recipe and it break it down for you. The only problem with this site is, if you don't tell it how many it serves, it assumes the recipe you're inputting is for 1 person. Here's the link for this site calorie count
