Is Diabetes my #1 priority

Now being a juvenile onset/type 1 diabetic, you're probably screaming YES it has to be. I ask you WHY?

Why does diabetes have to be any diabetes top priority? I mean other medical problems like cancer, which is really a bitch can crop up. Food allergies, sensitivities or intolerances can evolve and they can make life even more difficult than being a diabetic. A child with an illness. A child in general can wreck havoc in your life. Yes they also bring joy, but they need you 24/7 for the longest time. They need mommy and daddy. You have to pay attention to them.

So diabetes doesn't always have to be the top of every diabetics mind. There are things besides diabetes that the diabetic has to think about. Don't get me wrong, you have to take care of yourself, test your blood sugar, even if you have a CGM, because they can be wrong like me is most of the time. You have to have your insulin. You have to decide, not your doctor, where YOU want your blood sugar levels to be. After that, STOP worrying about what May happen. It's not worth it.

NOR mom or dad's. I think that is what bothers me the most. When I read how some of the parents of the diabetic children's parents behave. They are SO dam controlling. Granted, my parents didn't want me around, so they hoped my diabetes would have killed me. But still. Checking the blood sugar of your child in the middle of the night in the foot? Come on now. If you're really all that concerned if they are low. Wake the kid up. Or better yet, set the alarm clock in their bedroom and have them check their blood sugar if they are old enough. They have to get used to doing this themselves as upped teens and adults anyway.

And when the blood sugars are low. The parents who give them juice boxes and let them drink while sleeping! I cannot believe such stupidity. I mean get real. Why do this. Again, the child should be awake to know how it feels to have gone into an insulin reaction (my verbiage for hypo or low blood sugar) during their sleep. And they should know what they need to have to get themselves higher, age appropriate of course. But they need to know their bodies signs for highs and lows. That is a must. But mommy, and most often it's mommy who's the control freak, but sometimes it is daddy, seems to think that they have to do everything for their diabetic child. They have to know everything. Granted, it's nice that you want to know things. But YOU, in most cases, don't have the disease, your child does. You have to let them know things so when they go to school, out with friends, on dates, leave the house, that they can survive without you.

I think that when diabetics constantly think about their diabetes, that is what brings about the diabetes burn out. I've never had it. Not once since my diagnosis back in 1965. I don't post on my blog all the time. I don't visit the forums all the time. I just don't think about my diabetes that often. Yes I now have a pump, but that doesn't mean I'm thinking more of being a diabetic. Nope. It's just another way for the insulin to get into my body.

People talk about taking a vacation from their pump. I think they should take a vacation from thinking about being a diabetic. Not a vacation from taking care of their diabetes, just thinking about it. You can still do everything without thinking about the disease.
