So many new type 1's

I went to a meeting that was put on by a University and JDRF. To say I was disappointed is a BIG understatement.

First they started about 10 minutes late. I mean come on. They send us an email telling us that because of all the construction we should arrive early. AND they moved where this information meeting was being held. They moved it to a smaller building because, I believe, they weren't getting as many people as they had hoped. Then at the last minute more people signed up. So the send an email telling us if we didn't want to STAND for the two hours, we'd better get there early and there was construction near where the parking structure was.

They weren't very well organized either. The speakers may really care about juvenile onsets/type 1's. I don't know. I really couldn't tell. WHY? Because they were all rushing to finish what they had to say in a small amount of time. They all needed a lot more time to talk. Instead of having it from 6-8pm on a Wednesday evening, it should have been from 10an-?pm on a Saturday afternoon. The speakers needed more time. They couldn't say everything they wanted to.

The only thing I learned was that what they are calling an artificial pancreas isn't really a pancreas. It's really a pump. It's an insulin pump that they're trying to have faster acting insulin and glucagon or some other fast acting sweetener inside. My husband had told me that the artificial pancreas was the pump but I couldn't believe that was it. He was right.

On some of the forums I'm on, they wonder if and why there are more Juvenile Onset/type 1 diabetics being diagnosed in the US. Yes there are.

When I was diagnosed, they didn't have A1C's. If juvenile onset was in the doctors mind, you had your fasting blood sugar taken, mine was like 895. Then they did a glucose tolerance test. Those things were no fun. You drank this icky sweet stuff, then every hour they'd do a venipuncture until your blood sugar was normal, or I think it was 6 hours was up.

Also, back then the normal fasting blood sugar levels were not the stupid ridiculous low levels they are now: 73-100mg/dl. They were 75-140mg/dl, so anything within those ranges was perfectly NORMAL. Now, if your fasting is 101 or above you have a high blood sugar. My Endo doesn't worry if it's 120. I don't get worried until mine has been over 150 for long periods of time.

Everyone wonders why there are so many more new type one diabetics in the US. It's very simple, it's because of the drug companies putting pressure on whomever decides to make the rules for high, low and normal blood sugars. Over 100mg/dl is not high, not in any way, shape or form. If you get on insulin before your islets have stopped producing insulin by themselves, the "honeymoon " period will happen, because in reality you're not a diabetic. I never had a honeymoon period because My Islets were not producing any insulin at all.

I believe that the drug companies do not want there to be a cure for Juvenile Onset/Type 1 diabetes because of how much we have to spend each month/year to survive. Just think of it. Juvenile Onset/Type 1 Diabetes isn't something that is easily curable.

We can't expect the government to do anything for us. The people have to do things for themselves. The government works for us, but the way it is now, they are trying to make us depend upon them and THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

No the people running the different diabetic organizations have to step up to the plate and tell the drug companies that enough is enough. A blood sugar of 110 is not high, it is perfectly acceptable. An A1C of 7 is good too. The organizations who are supposedly helping juvenile onset/type 1 diabetics have to stop listening to anyone but the people they're trying to help.
