Holidays and Food

A lot of diabetics have problems during T-day, Christmas and Easter because of the different foods that are served.  I myself have never been able to understand this.  I do not understand why people stuff themselves full of food during certain times of the year.  That makes no sense to me.

They give the amount of calories a person will consume on T-day and it's ridiculous.  I don't remember how much it is, but let me tell you I know I don't eat that much because #1 I HATE turkey and have problems eating ham.  I don't like stuffing or dressing.  I hate pumpkin and apple pie.  Thankfully nobody in my family likes sweet potatoes so we don't do those icky things.  I don't mind mashed potatoes, but now that my husband has to limit his salt, and he does all the cooking on holidays, the gravy isn't as salty.  He can't use a lot of other herbs because of my allergies, so we have problems there too.

I just don't understand why people think a diabetic cannot eat like a non-diabetic during T-day, Christmas, Easter, or birthdays.  I've been doing so since the I was diagnosed and that was in 1965.  I just had extra insulin to cover whatever extra food I was having.  I didn't count carbohydrates back then nor do I now.

I have never pigged out.  I don't eat like I've been on Survivor or been on a hunger strike.  I just don't understand this attitude.  Why do people want to eat so much during holidays and special occasions?  Nobody has yet been able to give me an explanation that makes any sense to me.

Eat normally.  Eat normal amounts.  If a diabetic eats a normal amount they won't have any problems, just like a non-diabetic.  People have to stop acting like pigs during special occasions and holidays.
